Food Save Initiative

Food waste causes 36 million tonnes (8%-10%) of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. 1.3 gigatons of edible food wasted releases 3.3 gigatons equivalent of carbon dioxide. When food ends up in landfill, it generates methane, a GHG 25 times more potent than CO2.
3 million of people are depending on food banks, making it an increase of a third compared to last year. 2023 the Trussel Trust alone has been handing out more than 2.5 million food parcels. 11 million people live in poverty in the uk, 4.22 of them children.

At the age of 9, my oldest child initiated a 'Food Waste' group, later refered to as the 'Food Save' group. She couldn't understand why her peers would throw perfectly good and edible food under the table. After she reported her observations to the head of school, and expressing her concerns, a meeting was called.

The meeting with the children, aged 8 and 9 were then to discuss food waste, it's social and ecological impact, and the ways to prevent to food waste. Growing and processing, transporting, distributing, preparing, consuming, and wasting food creates Greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change. About a third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is linked to food.

They designed a poster, and inspired the creation of a permaculture garden in the shool's yard, with a compost heap.

  • 100 buckets of water to produce just one loaf of bread

  • 54 buckets of water to rear one chicken breast

  • 6 buckets of water to grow one potato

  • one bucket of water to grow one tomato

  • for 1kg of food waste over 2.5kg of CO2 is emitted

We have brought forward a proposal to install a Mini Food Bank on the premises to support the children at the school (and surrounding areas). A mini food bank is going to be installed at the Chandos Community Centre, and we are working on setting up a food hub, that operates as a link between food surplus donations and families in need.
