About 1/3 of Londoners is under 20. And 3/4 of them live in the most deprived areas. 3/4 of boroughs with the highest levels of violent offending also have higher proportions of children under 20 living in poverty. Over 3,500 young Londoners are at risk of getting involved in crime.
Community gardening
In 2019, 10.5 square miles of vacant land have been unused in London.
Community gardens provide a wealth of benefits for the physical and mental health of the communities, connect people from different backgrounds and create a feeling of belonging. Children playfully learn about life sciences.
The ecosystems, the fauna and flora, benefit vastly, as well as the positive effects of cooling, avoid flooding, blocking UV rays and generating oxygen through photosynthesis.
Food Save Initiative
Food waste causes 36 million tonnes (8%-10%) of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. 1.3 gigatons of edible food wasted releases 3.3 gigatons equivalent of carbon dioxide. When food ends up in landfill, it generates methane, a GHG 25 times more potent than CO2.
3 million of people are depending on food banks, making it an increase of a third compared to last year. 2023 the Trussel Trust alone has been handing out more than 2.5 million food parcels. 11 million people live in poverty in the uk, 4.22 of them children.
Nature Club
Children in the UK only spend 1/2 - 1 1/2 hours outside per day, and signifacantly more time, 2 1/2 hours a day, on devices. Children under 10 should spend at least 2 - 3 hours a day doing a variety of physical activities and outdoor play. Children with wealthy parents spend double the time outdoors than kids from lower income families.
Swap Shop
The fashion industry is the third largest contributor to climate change. after food and constructions. The clothes industry is responsible for 2.3 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions, uses 93 billion cubic meter of water (and 20% of waste water), almost 90% of microfibres waste. Synthetic textiles cause half a billion ton of micro particles, the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles that end up in the earths water system. Less is more - sharing is caring!
