Nature Club

Children in the UK only spend 1/2 - 1 1/2 hours outside per day, and signifacantly more time, 2 1/2 hours a day, on devices. Children under 10 should spend at least 2 - 3 hours a day doing a variety of physical activities and outdoor play. Children with wealthy parents spend double the time outdoors than kids from lower income families.

Is it the lack of green spaces, playgrounds, city farms, that children spent significantly more time indoors locked to their devices? Interestingly it seems like children in rural areas, are having higher amounts of screen time then their London peers. How come?

We have been looking around to find places that allow physical activities, and opportunities of outdoor play, and Forest school approaches in urban spaces.

Since Scallywag Mosh Pit started, we have been co-playing and learning with a number of amazing mum initiatves, such as Sewing Seeds and Family Folks, or Kid's Club Community Road, EV Parent Club and CM Toddler Group.

We have been roaming mountains, planes and forests in Portugal and Germany, the Milbertshofer Kinder und Jugendland, and we are spoilt to be welcome at the beautiful Forest School woodlands and sandy beaches in North Norfolk.

We are busy building tipis, rafts and boats. We build bee sanctuaries and bug hotels, opening hedghog highways and building them shelters out of cardboard and leaves. We leave water out, when it's too hot and dry for animals to find water supplies, and we watch the busy robins building their nests.

We are picking resin from the trees, we are foraging herbs, leaves, nuts and fruit, to cook and make jam, to use for infusions and blossom + leave printing.

We have applied at the council for permission to turn a derelict patch of land in our neighbourhood into a flourishing garden, and we looking forward to partner with a Newham charity, to create a beautiful community garden in East Ham.

Eyes and ears peeled we are looking for opportunities to bring a little bit of green into East London, and to see children blossom in the freah air and sun with rosy cheeks, their hands drenched deep into the soil, sowing seeds, planting seedlings and watching them slowly grow.
